Neuropsychology and research background

Kelly is a registered psychologist (general scope) with extensive experience in the neuropsychological assessment of children, spanning infancy to adolescence.   She completed a PhD at the University of Canterbury under the supervision of Professor Lianne Woodward and Dr Patricia Champion. Kelly has also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychological Practice via Massey University. Kelly leads the neuropsychology research programme within the institute.

Clinical and research background

Kelly is  NZ Registered Psychologist, with extensive experience in the neuropsychological assessment of infants and children. She undertook her training with the Canterbury Child Development Research Group at the University of Canterbury, supervised by Professor Lianne Woodward. Kelly also completed a postgraduate diploma in psychological practice, including internships in private practice and academic settings. Since joining AUT in 2010, Kelly has managed a number of large challenging studies, including the Health Research Council of New Zealand funded Brain Injury Outcomes New Zealand in the Community (BIONIC) study and an international, multi-centre pilot trial examining a self-management approach to stroke recovery. A number of projects have also been funded in an effort to examine genetic contributions to children’s recovery following traumatic brain injury. Kelly leads the neuropsychology programme at NISAN.

Research Methods

Kelly is involved in a wide range of quantitative research projects, some of which also incorporate qualitative components. Recent research projects include clinical trials, pilot studies, systematic reviews, and observational research.

Research Interests

Kelly has particular interests in child outcomes within the context of a range of health conditions. Research to date has examined neuropsychological outcomes within the context of traumatic brain injury, neuromuscular conditions, stroke, and very preterm birth.

Teaching Areas

Kelly is Paper Co-ordinator for one faculty-wide postgraduate paper – Integrative Research - HEAL811. Each year, this paper is offered in semester one (on-campus) and semester 2 (online).

Publications, Awards and Honours

In 2010, Kelly was a member of a research team that was awarded the AUT Vice Chancellors Research Team Excellence Award (National Institute for Stroke and Applied Neurosciences Team). Kelly is a member of the TBI expert panel for the Global Burden of Disease Project, and .Executive Board member and nominated spokesperson of Brain Injury – Waikato.
